Gerd Grimmig was born in Freden (Lower Saxony) in 1953. After studying mining at Clausthal Technical University, he worked in mining operations at various plants and in the mining division at the head office of Kali und Salz AG (now K+S Aktiengesellschaft). Between 1990 and 1996, he held several plant manager positions in the mining division. Between January 1997 and September 2001, Gerd Grimmig was managing director of Kali und Salz GMBH and responsible for the mining department. Since October 2000, he has been a member of the Board of Executive Directors of K+S Aktiengesellschaft. He is responsible for the Waste Management and Recycling business unit as well as K+S Consulting, MSW Chemie, the Technical Center (Mining, Geology, Technics/Energy, Research & Development, Environment & Safety, Inactive Plants) and Animal Hygiene Products. Gerd Grimmig is married and has two daughters.
