K+S invests in diverse measures to protect the environment and maintain the variety of species. This “fish ladder” on the Werra river for the weir near the Harnrode hydroelectric plant makes the Werra more easily accessible for fish and small animals.

Potash Production and Water Protection

We mine potash and magnesium crude salts underground, which we process into high-quality mineral fertilizers and industrial products through complex and multi-phase treatment and refining processes.

Because the crude salt also contains non-recyclable salts and other solid elements, these are separated from the aforementioned valuable substances and disposed of as residue. We either heap up the solid residues or transport them back into the mines underground. Within the limits of existing permits and in compliance with threshold values, we dispose of wastewater from production processes and saline water arising due to precipitation onto our tailings piles by discharging it into river waters and by injecting it into deeper rock strata.
