Special fertilizers from Germany for palm trees in South-East Asia
When Kieserite is loaded onto railway trucks at the K+S Sigmundshall plant near Hanover, the special fertilizers start on a journey that will take them half way round the world. It leads through the “Kali-Kai" quay facility in the port of Hamburg and a three- to four-week journey by ship through the Mediterranean and the Suez Canal to the ports of Kelang in Malaysia or Belawan on Sumatra. There, the bulk goods are bagged and transported to large-scale plantations by lorry. The plantation operators swear by the K+S fertilizers “made in Germany.” No other provider on the world market can supply a similarly ideal nutrient cocktail for their crops.

K+S Fertilizer Manager: The right menu for arable crops
In the case of fertilizers for agricultural crops, the rules that apply are similar to those for human nutrition. Too much results in obesity and illness while too little results in the loss of those elements that are essential for life. Thus, we check our dietary plans, calculating calories, vitamins and minerals. The farmer does things no differently when he determines what quantities of fertilizers are required for his crops.

Top turf for world class football
Green, well-tended turf is the centrepiece of the new Allianz-Arena in Munich. As the stage for the game, the magical rectangle already casts a spell on spectators even before the game starts. If conditions are right, the ball will flow, will the players manage? Even before the main actors Ballack, Schweinsteiger & Co. walk out onto the turf, a first look at it will determine whether there is approval or a red card for the pitch. The following 90 minutes are not only the most important minutes of the week for players and fans, the turf must also demonstrate that it is in top shape.

How much sulphur fertilizer does the land need?
Until the 1980’s of the preceding century, farmers could delight in receiving about 60 kilograms of sulphur per hectare each year (which corresponds to 6 grams per squarer meter), delivered to them at no charge by “air mail” as well spread in a wonderfully even way at the same time. It’s no surprise that sulphur fertilizers were not an issue in farming specialist circles for a long time, as there was always enough available in the soil.

Correlation of salt intake and blood pressure has not yet been proved
Medical students today are still learning that the correlation of salt intake and blood pressure has indeed been proved. However, this interaction has not yet been proved indisputably by scientists. On the contrary, current meta analyses of major studies of the past 40 to 50 years are increasingly questioning this statement. Scientifically, there is no reason for dogmatic adherence to the gen-eral recommendation of dietary salt restriction for everyone.

Grit is no alternative – good arguments for de-icing salt
Anyone who has to decide the on form of winter road clearance service must weigh up numerous interests. Road safety is the key factor – after all, human life is at stake. However, environmental aspects, such as, for example, impact on vegetation, groundwater and energy consumption also play a role. Last but not least, and in view of the financial situation of many public sector service providers, expenditure on spreading as well as follow-up cost influence decisions.

The Merkers crystal grotto – the world of white gold
People have wanted to know what the world looks like below the earth’s surface not just since Jules Verne’s "Journey to the Centre of the Earth." Thus, it is no surprise that there is a particular fascination about mines that receive visitors. They make it possible to travel back in time to explore the history of the earth. The past lies before us like an open book where salt, silver, lead, slate or coal were previously mined.

A journey in time into the world of white gold
"History that one can touch" – that is how one can describe a visit to the former potash mine at Merkers, which belongs to the K+S Group. Since its opening in 1991, almost one million people have made the journey in time into the depths of the Fulda-Werra salt deposit. There one will discover 240 million years of earth’s history, but also evidence of the more recent past.

Underground landfill facilities serve as raw material stores
Underground landfill facilities in salt rock are considered the safest way of disposing of hazardous waste. A further advantage of underground landfill facilities is that waste can be recovered from them again. This provided waste producers with the possibility of recovering the raw materials that waste contains in a way that generates profits.

Where can problem waste go?
Good disposal concepts must have a long-term, calculable and safe character. In the search for suitable sites for the storage or reutilisation of problem waste, the caverns that K+S has at its disposal as a result of the mining of crude salt have proved to be exceptionally suitable. This is because salt deposits, as a result of their geological history, are completely sealed off from the biosphere – i.e air and water – as a result of natural barriers.

The baby is booming
There are many possibilities for shipping goods from A to B: lorry, rail, inland waterway or sea, packed or in bulk. However, there is one option that is gaining an increasing number of friends. When Kieserite, for example, is to be transported from Sigmundshall to South-East Asia, or nitrogenous fertilizers from Antwerp to China, containers are increasingly used. While only about 5,400 containers with K+S products were shipped in 2001, the number increased to more than 45,000 in 2005. There is a good reason for this: The large boxes offer advantages in equal measure for both buyers and manufacturers.
