Visit to the Werra Verbund Plant

Minister Zypries Learns About Investment in Environmental Protection and Is Impressed by a Product Range in Demand Worldwide

Federal Economics Minister Brigitte Zypries paid a visit to the Werra Verbund plant today at the invitation of Dr. Burkhard Lohr, chairman of the K+S Board of Executive Directors. She was accompanied by Michael Roth, minister of state in the Foreign Office, who comes from Heringen. The visit focused on the use of domestic raw materials as well as the efforts being made by K+S to ensure that production is environmentally friendly.

The guests learned at first had about the extensive environmental projects in which K+S has invested about 600 million euros since 2011 at the Werra plant’s sites in Hesse and Thuringia. During a tour of the plant, the visitors saw what progress was being made on the construction of the new kainite crystallization and flotation facility (KCF plant). It will enable K+S to reduce wastewater volume once again by up to 20 per cent starting from next year. Particular interest was also shown in the product range comprising plant nutrients, industrial products and high-purity pharmaceutical salts produced at the plant and which are in demand worldwide.

Dr. Burkhard Lohr stressed that “we want to create a good future for the domestic mining industry. We use production processes that are state of the art on a global scale and, in addition, we are continuing to evolve environmentally friendly processing methods. However, we also need a reliable environment for the long term. In this regard, we are counting on social consensus and the support of politicians in order to be able to make our contribution to industrial value creation in our country.”

Federal Economics Minister Brigitte Zypries said: “I am impressed by the commitment displayed by site employees to producing goods that are in great demand worldwide, from fertilizers to raw materials for pharmaceuticals. It is very evident at the Werra Verbund Plant how important domestic raw materials are for the regional economy but also for Germany as an industrial base. K+S has done a great deal to bring about environmentally friendly extraction and production processes. It will continue to be important in the future too to remain innovative and to bolster research and development in order to further diminish the environmental impact of the extraction of raw materials.

This makes the plant an important employer and training enterprise in the area between the cities of Bad Hersfeld, Bad Salzungen and Eisenach. In addition, it is an important source of work for local medium-sized businesses as well. This makes the plant a key element in the economic and demographic development of the region of eastern Hesse and western Thuringia.
