Analytic and Research Center

Research expertise bundled together at new site

Two years after construction began, Chairman of the K+S Board of Executive Directors Norbert Steiner and Thuringia Premier Bodo Ramelow today inaugurated the K+S Group’s new Analytic and Research Center in Unterbreizbach.

On the occasion of the opening, Norbert Steiner pointed out that the new facility would enable K+S to further strengthen and expand its international technological leadership in extracting and processing rock and potash salts. “The innovations and ideas that our employees will develop here in the new Analytic and Research Center are an important key to a successful future for potash and salt mining,” he said. “They are using their knowledge to continue the research work done by several generations of scientists and technicians and to make a major contribution to the future of mining in the coming generation.”

The new building in the middle of the Werra potash district offers modern laboratory and testing facility jobs for about 100 scientists, engineers and specialists on approximately 9,000 square meters of usable space. The project has an investment amount of about 30 million euros.

The key tasks of the Analytic and Research Center are to carry out a wide range of analyses and application-oriented basic research for all business units of the K+S Group, as well as process and product development. A significant and constant working objective is to formulate and further develop processing methods for potash production, in order to satisfy increasing environmental requirements.

Another important function is to provide specific and advanced training to new employees. Apart from that, the Analytic and Research Center will also take on more key research and analysis tasks for foreign subsidiaries and production sites of the K+S Group.

Research expertise with a long history

The Analytic and Research Center is continuing the long history of German potash research. The first facility of this kind was the so-called “potash research institution” established in Staßfurt in 1919. After periods in Berlin and Hanover, it moved to Heringen in 1989, its name having changed to the K+S Research Institute in the meantime.

Milestones from the Institute’s work are the numerous improvements in classical processing and analysis procedures, the development of the waste-waterless electrostatic separation process (ESTA) as well as optimizations in the exploitation of raw materials and the reduction of production residues, such as the customized concept of the KCF (Kainite Crystallization Flotation Facility), one of the key building blocks of the Four-Phase Plan for saline waste water disposal. Another current point of focus of the work concerns process analysis technology. As a result of developing and installing modern online analysis systems directly in the production process, manufacture management will significantly improve.
