Salt Business Unit
The Salt business unit includes the European producer esco – european salt company GmbH & Co. KG, the South American supplier K+S Chile S.A., and Morton Salt, Inc. with production sites in the United States, in Canada and on the Bahamas. The Salt business unit offers its customers food grade salt, industrial salt, salt for chemical use and de-icing salt.
The world's largest supplier of salt
With an annual production capacity of about 32 million tonnes of salt, K+S is the world’s largest supplier of salt products. With esco K+S operates three rock salt mines, two brine plants and several evaporated salt plants in Germany, France, the Netherlands and Spain. Further more the subsidiary includes a processing site in Czech Republic as well as severall sales subsidiaries in Europe. K+S Chile extracts rock salt in Salar Grande in Chile’s Tarapacá desert through cost-effective open-cast mining. In the north-eastern part of Brazil, the subsidiary Salina Diamante Branco operates a sea salt facility. The American K+S subsidiary Morton Salt is one of the largest salt producers in North America and operates six rock salt mines, nine evaporated salt plants, three solar salt plants and four plants for processing solar salt in the United States, in Canada as well as on the Bahamas. K+S has acquired mining licences from a group of local investors to set up a solar salt plant in Western Australia (Ashburton Salt Project). The project is still in the very early stages of development.
